Was just wondering what polys you have, specimen size, what their juvie growth rate is/was, what you feed, rotation of food (how often do you feed food A compared to food B), feeding schedule, planted tank or bare, tank size, day/night length, WC, and just about anything you could relate to growth.

I have four grow outs in a lightly planted 20 gallon tank. Sunlight slightly reaches the tank so I keep them in about 12 hours of day time (8 hours of sunlight, 4 hours of lamps). I feed them small fillets of pangasius (cream dory), sinking carnivore pellets, rarely some mealworms, used to feed them bloodworms until I read somewhere that they suck when it comes to nutrition, small pieces of sliversides, chopped up market shrimp, sometimes african night crawlers, and the occassional small feeders (which my ornate loves to catch). I do like a regular feeding every night. I leave a couple of pieces enough for each and take out excess in the morning. I change food everyday. I feed the fillets and the pellets more often than silversides and the others. I stopped feeding the bloodworms too.

Specimens:
2x Endli - Both about 3". Got them 2-3 months ago at about 1 1/2-2". Pretty thick. Theyre growing pretty slow and dont eat unless the lights are off but once I come back I notice a bump in their stomachs.

Ornate - 3". Got him about a month or two ago at about 2". Never came out for about a month and only recently started exploring. Never see him feeding except for the time I saw him with a small feeder in his mouth.

Delhezi - 5". Got him the same time as my endlis at around 2 1/2-3". Def has the fastest growth rate. Very thick and is always out and about. Poor markings but great personality. He's the only one I see eating with the lights on. Although no one is bullying anyone in the tank. They all get along.

I also have a WC Lap, 10" and 2CB sens, one 9" and the other 7". The Lap is pretty new so I dont know what his growth is. The other 2 were pretty slow. Both are around 2yrs of age and seem to have stopped growing longer and have only reached their length this year.

Sorry for the long post. Wanted to compare mine to yours. :D How about you guys? What are your experiences?

Saw this on another thread. Can anyone confirm?

This is by King-eL:<br />

"...I also noticed that they grow faster with less decoration/hiding space to no decoration at all and grow an average rate or slower when keep with plenty of hiding space. This actually works in many different species of fish as a form of self defense against large predators. Reason why they grow faster when keep in with less decor or no decor at all because they are in the open and are expose to predators. The fish need to grow fast or it will get eaten. On the other hand, fish that are keep in with plenty of hiding space grow an average rate or slower because they need to stay in that hiding place and wait till they can no longer fit in that place. They will take advantage of that certain area for protection. Also bichirs that are in the open gets the food first, than those that hides and wait for their turn.<br />

Other bichir keepers might have different experiences."<br />

it does make sense, i dont keep any sort of cave with my ornate and he grows at about 2 inches a month so far, but i hear they slow down around ten inches so that will be soon. So far other then this ornate, all ive had is a senegal that grew at about an inch a month under similar conditions, i like to not put hiding places for viewing purposes and i have read they get more territorial and aggressive w/ caves and such

I just have my polys in a plain tank with sand substrate. They don't mind. The hiding spots definately adds some aggression to the polys. they are a bit of a territorial fish. I had a hinding castle for my then new retropinnis bichir. Every day, I notice my other bichirs getting beaten up by the retro. I was going to sell the retro when i removed the castle thing. No aggression till this day.

As for diet, a varied one is the best. I feed mine salmon, talapia, catfish, and hikiri carnivorous pellets. Once every night.

haha i definitely have no say in bichir growth rate since my polys are still 6 or so inches after 2 years. Adequate tank size, balanced diet, and water changes provided.

I feed shrimp, tilapia and carnivore pellets. Ive gotten some nice growth in my teugelsi, my sen and delhezi however, not so much.My lapradei is new so I cant comments on his growth except for the fact that he has bulked up alot since I got him.

Thanks for the info guys. The other side of putting them in plain tanks is the issue about stress and all. They say that a stressed bichir wont grow properly. But if Buffalo's is growing 2" a month then I say go with it lol. So far no aggression at all from my bichirs. Even from my WC lap and smaller sens. Will probably remove the huge piece of wood in my tank then but I will keep the plants.

That sounds normal, like I said they stop growing so fast, my buddy in the city is trying to breed weeksii and its taken a few years to get them from ten to about 15 inches. He tells me and I've read its like that with most bichir, that's why the big ones are worth so much

Hey guys just a question, how many times a month can I feed my smaller (3-5") polys chopped beef heart?

I have never fed my bichirs beef hearts. but I heard it makes them explode in size. Beef hearts are fatty so remove as much fat as possible first. Limit these feeding or you'll end up with very obese bichirs.

Beef heards are only best when you want to make tiny baby bichirs grow. There is no point in feeding those to adult bichirs. No perfectly sure how much you could feed it per month.

I would say 3 times a week with other fishy foods and pellets.
