I've got a 3.75" senegalus and plan on getting a 6" ornate. (I've not seen the ornate yet, just going on reported length.) Would the two of them be able to growout in a 30 gallon for a while, or would the ornate try to have a snack? I know that ornates are an upper jaw species and don't have the gape of a lower jaw. There is also a chance that I'll be getting a 4" Polypterus mokelebembe at the same time (also reported length). The ornate and mokelembembe are housed together at the moment. Will the three of them get along? Thanks

they should be fine, i had my 15-16" ornate with my 10" palmas polli and they were fine. also added in many polys of diff size varying from 4"-9" and all were fine.

but as always fish temperaments can vary so just watch them for a while.

they will be fine for maybe 5 or 6 months at most

should be fine.
ive seen polys kept with other polys more than 2-3 times their size. :D
my endlis are 2 times longer than my albino senegal.(not as fat though :D )

Is the senegal small enough to fit in the ornate's mouth? Senegals are skinny looking and if the Ornate thinks it's a possible meal then it's bye bye senegal.

I was afraid this would happen. I have not yet seen the ornate or mokelembembe. The senegalus is quite plump though.

bichirs are smart.
just because the senegal looks skinny enough, the ornate wont touch him if hes too long.

I thought that might be the case as well, but I've seen numerous pictures of fish choking to death after swallowing part of a fish that was too large. (The tail protrudes out.) I guess I'll be able to tell after seeing the ornate.

i just picked up a 7-8" ornate and was wondering about keeping it w/ my 3-4" senegal, so good thread :) since the bichirs have spines on their dorsal finlets, will it cause problems if they are eaten? i'm not so worried about losing the senegal, i just dont want the ornate to get hurt if he eats it.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that if your ornate eats the seng head first, it'll be fine. There could be damage if it goes down tail first. I'd wait to get more opinions on this. If you do house them together, be sure to post back their interaction patterns!
