Hey guys! My lab is trying to collect DNA samples from as many different species (ideally all) from this family of fish.

If any of you were interested, I could send you tissue vials, and you could remove your fish, take a picture of the fish, clip a fin, and then just tell me which fin you clipped that could be huge.

I guess right now I am just gauging to see if we could get samples this way - I dont want to buy and hold every species of poly myself.

Thanks, Forrest

Bump - anyone? This will not hurt your fish in anyway - the tissue will regrow, and you will be part of some never before completed scientific research.

Thanks for reading and considering - you can PM me with questions and requests. All shipping costs will be covered by my lab.

I'd be up for sending you some samples although I am in the UK so that might be too far to ship them?

pm me if it is possible

I dont think it should be too far - the samples wont go bad that is for sure.

What we would do is send you a small box with some vials. These vials will be filled with an alcohol solution. All you need to do is get the clips in there and they should be good at room temp indefinitely.

Im going to post a picture to show you the bare minimum as far as detail is concerned - the hardest part is getting a good photo voucher of the fish.

You also need to be able to provide us with an exact species name on your fish - you must know the id 100%

Thanks for the interest, I will send you a PM now.

The picture I am posting is just about the worst picture you can use - it must be clear, detailed, close up, and the fins must be displayed - that is why it is often best and easiest to remove your fish and photograph them.

Thanks scott - maybe if we could come up with a list from all of the species in this family - we could have individuals say which ones they were willing to send till we had them all accounted for?

Come on MFK I know you guys are good for this!

I live in Sweden and have a CB Delhezi, WC Lapradei, CB Lapradei and a CB Palmas Polli. Is it worth sending tests here? :P CB = captive bred and WC = wild caught if you didnt know.

And a list:
Upper jaw:
P. Palmas Palmas
P. Palmas polli
P. Palmas buettikoferi
P. ornatipinnis
P. delhezi
P. senegalus senegalus
(P. senegalus meridionalis) Unknown in hobby?
P. retropinnis
P. Mokelembembe
P. weeksi
P.teugelsi

Lower Jaw:
P. endlicheri endlicheri
P. endlicheri congicus
P. Bichir lapradei
P. bichir bichir
P.ansorgii

Then there are hybrids and Dabola end something more which Im not sure if they are hybrids or species.

Wow. First off, PM sent. Second off - using USPS I can flat rate you a box for cheap - it will cost me less than $100 to ship both to you and back.

If anyone would like to add to the list - I need samples from all fish in the polypteridae family.
