I found a 20 oz bag of poly fiber stuff yesterday. Is this okay to use in my filters? Its the same as filter floss isn't it? It says it is flame retardant though; does that mean it is treated with something? thanks

The treatments applied to "fire retard" have been listed as environmental toxins when in their original form (liquid). I would have to recommend that you not use treated fibers.
If you go to Walmart (i know, evil) you can purchase bulk cloth that you can then cut to fit exactly. This is then machine washable, use baking soda and warm cycle. Also use an extra rinse. Air dry. If you make enough of these you will always have plenty on hand to use.
This will save you money.

Okay thanks. I was going to put some in the filter yesterday because the tank was really cloudy after a water change. I'm glad I didn't.

No problem. My profession is a Firefighter/Paramedic. I see the world a little differently. I have performed some research in the field of flame retardents and fiber treatments. This thread caught my eye. Glad I could help.
I use my wiges sewing machine to make filter bats. She has no prob with this b/c it saves $ in the long run.

I have a new question. I read somewhere that washing flame retardant fiber stuff with baking soda makes it safe to use. Is this true?

I have had nothing but bad experiences with poly-fil, IMO, pay the 1.50$ more to get the real stuff (poly-fil is like 1.89$ at wal-mart, same size filter floss is 3.29)
