After some asking around for ideas someone mentioned polys as a possible fish for a biology classroom.

Are there any species that are appropriate for a 55 gallon? This is a long term option, not temporary or as a growout.

You can have some senegals, beuttikofferi and some delhezi, they can be in a 55g for long term, just make sure the senegal and delhezi are captive breed, for beuttikoferi they grow slow even its wild caught.

I would go for more active polys to get the kids attention a few sens and dels would keep the kids interested. Also think ropes would be a good idea you could also touch on the polypterid evolution process.

Polys are seperated into 2 groups upper jaw and lower jaw i think the kids will enjoy them and find even the larger growing LJ's interesting (pics not in the tank lol)
My kids and they're friends love them and are amazed at how they really are dino fish and how they breathe
