So at my LFS, they got a trade in 5" (Polypterus senegalus). When they put it with 2" flowerhorns, one immediately bit one of its eyes out. They moved it in with a tank of 2" Vieja synspilum. It was fine when i left, but when i got back the next day, its other eye had been found missing and it had been euthanized.

I have kept a P. senegalus with several different kinds of cichlids with wide ranges of aggression:
green terror (Adinoacara stalsbergi & rivulatus), midas (Amphilophus citrinellus), jack Dempsey (Rocio octofasciata), Aequidens metae, Cryptoheros cutteri, jewel (hemichromis bimaculatus), Texas (Herichthys carpintis), Rainbow (Herotilapia multispinosa), Convict (Amatitlania nigrofasciata), Honduran Red Points (Amatitlania siquia).

I've even had polypterus in with a Mbuna colony, but i've never had a cichlid tear out one of their eyes.

Why did this happen? Are flowerhorns just that mean? Was it because the fish at the store are likely not as well fed as they would be in home aquaria?
