Poly gills?

I am not a Poly person so forgive me for my ignorance.
This may have been brought up before but I didn't find anything with a quick search about this.

What causes a Poly to sprout it's gills?

Lack of oxygen in the water?

I know that the gills help increase the surface area in which oxygen is taken in much like an axolotl. I just wanted to know if they only sprouted under special conditions. Thanks for your time everyone.

IME, my babies only sprouted it when I kept them in clean water with high oxygen content.

This makes it so that they don't have to surface to breathe and can save energy for growing.

Why thank you! They are my pride and joy and hopefully they will have babies in the near future. Thanks for the input as well.
