I'm new here, so I apologize if I posted in the wrong board. I recently got 2 polypterus. I've done my research but I don't remember seeing that it's common for them to jump out of the tank and to follow each other out. I know they breathe oxygen so they will come up to the surface. So both of my polypterus ended up jumping out of my tank despite there being a cover, and I managed to find them while they were still alive. I was asleep when this happened and when I woke up I checked the tank and I found them. They were pretty dry but both of them struggled when I pick them up. When I say pretty dry I mean that when I pick them up they had a slight stick to them. Which leads me to believe that they didn't fully dry out. The reason for this post is I would like to know if anyone else is experienced this and what I should look out for, for the next few days. They seem to be okay but they aren't moving too much. They are doing their little slight mouth opening exercises and what seems to be breathing or at least alive. But they aren't as active as right before they jumped out which I assume is obviously because they went through a traumatic experience just now. But it's been about 4 hours and I just want to make sure if I should get my hikari prazipro ready just in case, or if there's another medication I should quickly get just in case. I live in Japan so I'll be using AmazonCoJP. I really hope that they're okay because I feel like I lucked out finding a male and a female juvenile. I haven't named them yet so I think because of this incident I'm going to name them Bonnie and Clyde.

Welcome to the forum!
When any of my fish jump they are a little off for a few days, lots of stress (think if you were held underwater for a few hours but never drowned).
For now, just keep an eye on them. I’d have an antibiotic ready in case a bacterial infection breaks out, but they should be good. I’ve heard of some fish (spiny eels) being out of water for days, dry as a rock, coming back. Polys can stay out of water for quite some time.

This is good news to hear thanks! I was heart broken to think so young and to die cus i was ignorant of such a big detail. Ive taken another precaution though and have covered the bigger opening areas and left the smaller spots open for oxygen to escape. I hope Prazipro will do because it turns out finding antibiotics for ancient fish in japan is extremely difficult. most of the stuff on the market is exclusively for koi and goldfish.

I’ve had several jump, usually only juveniles. You’re lucky they’re alive! Secure the openings and it shouldn’t happen again, it is normal though in my experience.

you’ll know they’re dead when they look like this lol

A lot of the medicines are equally useful regardless of species. If it becomes life or death, goldfish medicine will work.
Prazi is good for flukes and other worms, best used on wild caught fish.

Happy to hear you found Bonnie and Clyde alive.

Ah, in that case I’d take their word (though shopkeepers aren’t always right).

I know lol, ive also researched their medicine online and some of them also warn against use for ancient fish, at least the non ich meds do. why i ended up paying 90 for prazipro =_=. I hope I wont have to order anything else but I hear malifax can be used with ancient fish.
