so i was watch'n the bichirs the other day and one of my senegals went to the surface for air. when it did it made this noise... and im really not sure how to describe it. it didnt sound like a noise that an fish would make - like a clicking or growling like some catfish. it was more like choking on air without actually choking, since it seems fine. it went to the surface again within a minute and it made another sound as it took a breath, this time it was a little different. any thoughts? should i be worried? as far as changes go, i have noticed that when they are chewing their food and i can see up into their gills it seems to be a bright red in there. i dont remember it being like that. so maybe they dont seem quite fine, though they do act fairly normal.

SOUND PRODUCTION
P.senegalus and P.retropinnis were studied and found to make two distinct sounds.A thumping noise and a moan.
The mechanics are unclear at this time.
Thumps: Occured during close encounters by conspecifics one or both would raise their dorsal fins and emit thumps the sound energy was strongest between 100-200z with a maximum rate of 3 thumps per second and decreasing as one conspecific moved away from the other.
Moans could be heard even without technical equipment. As conspecifics swam rapidly away from eachother or were startled.
Also reported to makes the same sounds(but not studied) are P. endlicheri, P.palmas polli, and P. ornatipinnis
(Abstract in Icthyological notes: Copeia 1988 (4) pp. 1076-1077).

as long as they seem fine don't worry you just have a heavy breather -Anne

damn...glad you're still awake when it happened...

these two in the shop never jump, but I only have water to 3/4 of the way

well its good to know everything sounds fine... no pun intended ;) and wow, a 20" endlie grunting, nice! i wonder if they can be taught to speak for treats.. like beefheart. of course something as big as your fish would want something a bit bigger im sure, like an entire feeder cow and not just the heart lol i can see it now, another "my bichirs stomach is really big" thread. and then you get on and its like "well, what did you feed it" .... "an - entire - cow" :) i can just see the cute little bichirs with all their faces stuffed.

Never done such a short reply before, but that sure is funny.... :)
