hey guys, at the lfs I work at, we received a senegal with missing pectoral fins (from our wholesale distributor). I know this is probably a sign of poor genetics and horrible living conditions and he will probably die, but im gonna rescue him anyway. what special care do you think will be required for his particular handicap? is there a chance they will regrow? any help will be greatly appreciated.

he has little stubs of what looks like were fins at one time. he is very skinny though, ive put him in a tank with little guppies in hopes that he will eat them. i also gave him shrimp pellets. i hope he makes it

ya, just take care of him like any other poly, good luck! pics?

:O That's too bad, hoping he recovers, keep us updated and post some pics, as for him eating the guppies I wouldn't expect him to, you may want to crush some hikari pellets or give him some bloodworms.

+1 on the blood worms. My poly's love blood worms. Also, pics would be great

a few days after i got my first endli in february, i noticed his left pectoral fin was missing. he definitely had it when he came home, and he was the only fish in the qt tank, so the only thing i could figure out was he had injured himself on one of the rocks in the tank. at any rate, his fin grew back beautifully. i let him live by himself for a while and until it was mostly grown back (took several weeks) before moving him to the bigger tank, and he did great! he is about 7 inches and fat now. his new fin looks identical to the other one. when it originally happened, i read an article that talked about how polys are one of the few creatures that can regrow skeletal fins. good luck!

That's pretty fascinating about the regrowth, I didn't know that. Hoping it's true of gars, too, haha.

ill have to get pics up on tuesday but they will be up for sure. im gonna get him some blood worms as soon as we get more in. he does have a good dorsal fin though, ive noticed that my poly with more spines grows 10x faster than the one with fewer. not sure if this is a real correlation or not but i hope he grows fast.

I would not get too hopefull about regrowth. Sound genetic which means thats how it will stay. I saw a batch of small endis at an LFS last year with the same condition. Small nubs where the pectoral fins should have been. Good on you for giving it a home.
