i just got a little guy about 4" he spends alot of time by the surface(no hes not dead) is this normal? and how fast will he grow in a 45 gallon tank?

yes juvy bichirs sometimes like to hang out by the surface. i usually see this in the more active species.

its fairly common in juveniles especially senegals.How fast will it grow depends on many things water conditions including temp.,quality of food and genetics can all effect its growth rate.In theory you can expect as much as an inch to an inch and a half per month till it reaches 7-8 inches then it slows-Anne

thats normal. my two sens stayed at the top for a whole day. thought something was wrong with them. after one died the other spends its life at the bottom.

my bichir is pretty slow at growing, I took her out of the main tank last night cause one of my ornates bit her

I am glad to hear this,i just got 1 today and he stays at the top all the time!!
