I am new to this site and am in the planing stages of building a plywood tank. has anyone used polycarbonate sheets for aquariums? It is supposed to be 250 times stronger than glass. any help would be greatly appreciated. I would like to make the tank 96"Lx24"Dx36"T.
Polycarbonate is more expensive than glass or acrylic. It is also very flexible. It may be difficult to bond (I'm not sure how silicone adheres to polycarbonate). People don't tend to use it for whatever reasons.
Also, welcome to MFK! I noticed you're from Oregon, what part?
1) Polycarbonate is not 250x stronger than glass. It is in fact weaker than glass. It has far more stretch to it than glass however, which is what gives it it's bullet resistant properties in 1"+ thickness. It also scratches very easily, even easier than acrylic.
2) Look at it this way, if it was a good tank material, you'd see lexan tanks all over the place.
Thanks for the info. I would rater go with glass, just had a large piece of poly offered to me for cheap.
I plan on splitting the front and using two smaller glass panes, each one will be 4'x3'. would 1/2" glass work for that?
