The Real Norcal
think it will be okay or big no no?

alot of peeps suggested the polyfiber you can get at walmart for mechanical filtration (the compressed polyfiber padding, not the loose stuff).

I went and got a package that held a 3'x3' pad of compressed polyfiber and started using it as mechanical, and ever since I've been having to completely break down my HOB's on a regular basis and pick away the strands of polyfiber wrapped around the impeller...not sure if thats actually bad for the filters so much as annoying for me,but needless to say I was planning on going back to the regular old blue on one side white on the other filter floss once this pad is done, maybe sooner.

Now heres the problem:I recently moved my fish from their 75 to a 250 and I moved over all of the established filter media with it as well.

Am I taking a huge risk by putting that same polyfiber stuff in my FX5?I couldnt even find in the manual how you take the pump itself apart to service the impellor if needed, did I just skip through it too fast or can you not access the impellor on an FX5?

last question is how does the water flow through an FX5?I put my mechanical in the top tray, but I put felt over the top of that, should I have put the felt lining the bottom of the top tray or will that work out fine?

Try to find a bonded poly-fil sheet (sewing / cloth stores) since I've used the batten type I've never had that problem. Put it on top as a pre-filter.

Or use felt and clean more often:D.

I use the pillow stuffing from walmart :D Use it on top for a pre filter. I change it every week while doing my water change.

I'm pretty sure it the same stuff.I used the polyfiber pillow stuffing at first but that was even worse, then I switched to the polyfiber "bonded" or whatever.I dont have the package anymore but it comes in squares.

you guys never find threads of that stuff on your impeller?

Funny this topic came up today!

1 week ago, I filled the 3 center containers on my FX5 with the pillow padding from walmart, and left the regular FX5 sponges on the sides of each tray like normal.

A couple days ago, I start to hear noises from the filter, like the impeller running dry......so I unplug the unit, and tons of air came out, gave me the impression that the filter was running dry, enough water ran into the filter, when I turned it off, to give me the same impression..LOL

At first I thought it might've just been a freak occurance, since I have had no problems with any of the FX5's I have (6 units)

Well yesterday I had the same problem with the noises, again I unplugged the unit, and the same thing happened with all the air rushing out, and the unit filling up with water again!

Today same thing......I don't really understand what the problem could be, other then the floss not allowing the unit to burp itself, and thus releasing the air.....

I have since pulled out all the floss, refilled with ceramics like all the other filters , and it's been 12 hours, and the unit is running perfect.......

my 2 cents!
