Hey everybody, I was wondering, can Polypterus get to know their owners, like lets say an Arow can? I have a little female Senegalus, had her for about a month and a half, and when ever I come up to the tank, she is comming to see me more and more. Am I just crazy, or do they develop the ability to recognise us? and if so, to what extent? Thanks alot,

She's most likely associated you with food. However they can be very tame and seem to enjoy interaction with their owner,I had one that used to enjoy sitting on the palm of my hand -Anne

what anne said. i don't think they 'know' their owners like people say aro can. i don't try handfeeding any of my bichirs so mine actually get skittish whenever they detect me approaching the tank.

All my polypterus are skittish. I thought they are near sighted cuz they stara at the food before they grab it.

i know a guy who raised one from the time it was tiny and every time he fed it, he tapped on the side of the tank. now, 6 years later, every time it hears a tapping it comes out lookin for food and you can trick him into swimming by you lettin you pet him a little.
thats cute :)

what i did before, i train my senegalus, whenever i put my finger of the front of the tank they come near it but not always, at least they know i am there :)

The Ornate in my 100 gallon is very active & always reacts to my presence when I walk by the tank. Definately food motivated, tho. & probably triggered by increased activity of other fish in the tank.

If Pavlov had owned a big tank full of cichlids he would have figured out that whole opperant conditioning thing WAY sooner.

how in the world did you sex yours? i have been trying for so long and reading as much as i can, but i can't seem to get them. i can sex almost any fish, but these guys i just can't seem to figure out (clown knives are a pain too). how do you do it?

They can easily identify their owner/food source.

You will see a completely different behavier, if You stand alone in front of the tank, or if You stand there with someone else.

My ornatipinnis only let me come near the tank without disappearing. My wife could come as close as 1 meter (about 3 feet) until they hid, and if anyone else entered the room, they where gone immediately.
