Polypterus, datnoids and Gold wolf combo?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Too much risk. Might work with dats as they can fiend off, but with polys no. polys can be docile and would be sitting ducks for a gold wolf's curiosity whether they're food or not. Apparently, the wolf will also be unto your dats leaving them with scratches or bite marks.

Anyone tried it? I might get another gold wolf in my polyterus and datnoid comm, but I want to hear feedbacks. Thanks

Another as in there's already one in there? Or???

It could be ok. Never kept datnoids but since they swim at diferent water levels for most of their parts, they would be OK I assume. My concern would be on the bichirs. I've kept bichirs with red wolves of the same size. It didn't end up exactly what I wanted them to but it wasn't the worst. My red wolf outcompeted my bichirs for food and like to chase them around.

If I were to do that combo, I would have the bichirs a bit bigger than the wolf. It depends on personality. Golds do grow bigger than the reds.

it would look sweet, but that wolf might terrorize the other tank inhabitants.

I have a red wolf w/ an ornate bichir and the only one w/ nips has been the wolf, they will compete for food and the wolf will win, so I decided to divide the tank only during feedings and its worked out quite nicely. The smaller wolves are very curious about their tank mates, it depends on how the tank mate reacts I believe to whether it will get beaten up. My ornate ignores it, and if it gets too pushy nips at him then the wolf stops bothering him.

When I said another, what I meant was I will pick up another gold wolf since I lost one from jumping out of my tank! It's just a 2 inch space from where the return pipe is from my sump and he still manage to jump out. Learn it the hard way

My bichirs are juvy size ranging from 6-7inch. There is a 6inch gold wolf for sale from out LFS. I'm only concerned about the ornate around 4".

There is a risk. The gold wolf could pick on the ornate. i would keep the gold with your 7 inch bichirs and grow the ornate out a bit.

I saw this combo before as I stated in another post....but they are with many other fishes too in a 250 gallon tank. I think the aquarium dimensions could influence. Everytime I saw a golden wolf he was swiming more close to the surface, different from the other traíras that are more ""bottom dwellers"" style.
Golden wolves are tough guys and can bully another fishes, but I never saw a problem with polypterus, probably duie to the different position in a aquarium OR due the fact that they are more concerned to chase each other (or other surface and midle tank fishes) than go to the bottom and attack polys. I don´t know the size of the tank but if you could have more fishes, alot of shelters and a good height tank the chances of this combo works increase!
