I am putting up a Polypterus delhezi tank and someone suggested that Wolf Fish (Hoplias malabaricus) work great with them?

NO NO! Forget it! The wolffish will eat him! Also wolffish need lower temperatures.

I never kept a delhezi. I think if the delhezi is bigger and you put the temp at 26C it could work for a while. But if the delhezi bothers the wolf, he'll still be shredded.

It could be risky, but I had a wild caught mal with a bichir for months. Never a problem. The bichir would cuddle up to the wold, and the wolf would tolerate it.

Also why would a wolf need lower temps? They are amazon fish.

Interesting...

The "Tararira" or Hoplias Malabaricus thrives in an around Buenos Aires in muddy waters with temps below 60F. They are considered the easiest fish to fish. I keep them without heater at around 65F and you certainly can't put a bichir with them.

Actually, Hoplias malabaricus has a wide distribution... There are PLENTY of them around here, in NE Brazil. And in the amazon, too. If you know the origin of your particular specimen, it's of great help. My 0.02 ;)

Best regards.

Daniel.

Do you know what the actual distribution is? Link?

I haven't seen wolffish in the Amazon. I mean I never caught one, never saw one on the market and never even heard of it when I was there. Around BsAs it seems to be the most common fish. A friend told me that he had caught over 50 of them in under an hour. Just like RBPs in the Amazon.

Well... According to Fishbase, the species distribution is "Central and South America: Costa Rica to Argentina in most rivers basins." In some books about commercial fishes of the Amazon, including one about the Santarém/ Pará region edited by IBAMA, there is Hoplias malabaricus listed too.

Best regards.

Daniel.

I read that but I don't trust Fishbase. I mean I am sure there are wolffish in the Amazon. Several websites say that. Although some exclude Argentina and say "CA to Brazil". But there appear to be more in Argentina than anywhere else. Almost nobody keeps wolffish in Argentina beacuse it is just too common.

I'd say wolffish should survive low temps until around 10C. At some 17C mine are still pretty active and hungry. Also waterquality is no issue with Argentine Malabaricus. They live in BsAs city parks. Yaak! You don't even want to know!
