How come some polypterus endlicheri have really bold dark bands and others same to have very light or faded bands? Is it related to there diet, how they are kept, the region they come from, wild vs captive bred etc? Does anyone have any knowledge on this subject?

Thanks

I know that a darker substrate will make their colors pop a little more. Not sure if it's a regional thing though.

wrong, they just vary from bichir to bichir. endilcheri endicheri has a more haphazard strip where the congicus has a more tiger like stripe. the darkness or lightness depends on the individual bichir.

there are 2 subspecies or varieties (or at least 2 :), the endlicheri endlicheri and the endlicheri congicus, the congicus is the type that has the ligher patterns

Im referring endlicheri endlicheri. I have seen endlicheri endlicheri with lighter bands.

I agree with this statement as well.
