Hi Guys,

Im planning to get some polypterus endlicheri Small for my tank with my small Panaques. The size fits both. But does anyone know if it would be a problem.

Tank size: 375 Liters (150x50x50)
Loads of driftwood
Dimmed ligths
Fine sand
Hi cirkulation

Hope to learn something today.

Cheers

Just want to ad my main consern. I have read a romer on the web about the Panaque´s want to grasp on the Bikir´s slimecoat :WHOA::WHOA: Witch I think is quite strange due to the fact that the panaque is a cornivores,,,

Can anyone confirm or dismiss this romer?

Thanks

hi there mark it is a fact, Panaque stands for Plecostomus right? not all pleco suck the bikirs slime coat, but it would really depend on the fish itself. You have a 50/50 chance on this.. its worth a try but once you notice trouble then remove one of the fish immediately.

I also do believe that plecos are not primarily carnivores but omnivores. Some of them feed on wood algae. Its worth a try mark, but its a gamble that you will take.

I have a senegal bichir and a few plecos, the common plecos that is. When, I had goldfish, the plecos do attach themselves to the tails of the goldfish and suck their slime coat. I will always shoo them away and they eventually stopped. Learned their lesson, I guess. When I went to a predatory fish community, I brought with me the plecos. They never did suck the bichir's slime coat. It really depends on the pleco. If you encounter a nasty one that goes for the slime coat, you will need to rehouse either of the fish. However, sometimes gentle nudges can do the trick and also never having the plecos starve and supplementing their protein needs. Plecos are omnivorous and they will suck on the slime coat to get proteins. Best is to simply not get the pleco so you will not have the problem in the first place.

And Panaques are less likely to eat slime coats than regular plecos. The one thing I would have for the royal pleco is plenty of driftwood for it to rasp on. I have small endlis with a royal, a breeding pair of bristlenose and a hi fin leopard pleco and none have attacked threatened them in any way.

Hi Guys.

Thanks for all the answers. The pleco is the Panaque nigrolineatus L-190 omnivore. I need to think it through to avoid this fail. I want a happy end and not problems.

Someone told me that it is not the Panaque that will be the problem but the hardcore Bikir that will eat the panaque, do dead rolls like the alligator bite of chunks of the Panaque... Seems unlikely to me. But you never know. Not all animals are meant to be kept in a tank.

Thanks again for the good answers

It´s a funny thing with fish. Some of them are just crazy and very difficult to keep. I have loads of experience on predatory fishes for Lake Malawi and Tanganyika. Some can keep a predator and some cant. It is not always the owner that screws it up, sometimes it is just a crazy fish

I have made the decision in the name of science, and hobby experience, to try the experience and separate them if there are any signs of trouble.

I will make an update every 3 months in this thread with pictures ect.
