was told by the LFS that the supplier told him these r Polypterus retropinnis lowei (which was renamed to Polypterus palmas palmas).

but looks like Polypterus retropinnis (which was renamed to Polypterus mokelembembe). it also looks like Polypterus sp. "Congo" (which was renamed to Polypterus retropinnis and now also Polypterus mokelembembe).

my ID is that its a Polypterus mokelembembe originally Polypterus sp. "Congo" (Zaire Green Bichir). anyone can help to confirm? TIA.

THE LAST PICTURE IT LOOKS LIKE RETROPINNIS THE FIST LOOKS LOKE A MOKE BUT i SAY RETRO.

they are P. retropinnis. nice ones! P. mokelembembe is a different species.

and you are confused about what got renamed to what :)

Old Name ---> New name
P. retropinnis ---> P. mokelembembe
P. sp. 'Congo' (Zaire Green) ---> P. retropinnis

these are two different fish.

thanks for the ID.

Infblue:

extracted from http://www.polypterus.info:
Scientific name: Polypterus retropinnis (Vaillant, 1899) - this was sp. 'Congo'
Scientific name: Polypterus mokelembembe (Schliewen &Schafer, 2006)

i got confused due to the dates here. unless these dates are that of their previous sci name which i doubt so. cos since mokelembeme was renamed in 2006 and retropinnis was renamed in 1899.

extracted from the
retropinnis page:
However, there is a new twist in the designation of P. retropinnis. In the paper referenced below, the authors state that the type series (of three specimens) for P. retropinnis is of mixed composition: two are the fish known in the hobby as P. retropinnis (with broad saddle markings) - which are now designated as the new P. mokelembembe - and the third is the species known in the hobby as Polypterus sp. "Congo" or Zaire Green Bichir - which is now designated as the "true" retropinnis.

ok it is my fault. i did not read up properly
. too excited with my new catch. :ROFL:

ya. the more we see the more confused we got. and the main problem was we only look at pictures. not information.

thanks. this is the 1st time i see them personally over here in singapore. there should be some other shipments before. we dont get to see them in singapore often. its the same for palmas palmas and moke. when the LFS called me up and told me he had lowei at that price i was quite doubtful. it was too good to be true. so after he described to me i manage to link it up to moke. finally i ID it as retro but i thought it was also renamed to moke. :screwy:
