I have this Polypterus, and I am unsure on species. I purchased him from a petstore downtown in a tank full of ornates, one albino senegalus, one regular senegalus and this guy. I asked them how much and they said "$30... but he is sick..." Well after much haggling I got him down to 15$ no tax! however he is missing both his eyes and his tail is split. He is about 5-6 inches, and despite is handicap ate within his first 5 minutes of being in my tank. Anway I have not idea what he is. My origanl asumption was Endlicheri however I am unsure.

He is super dark, almost black. He has the jaw and head of an Endlicheri, and he has the stripes more that a Delhezi displays... however they are on his body like a weeksii. He also seems to have the pectoral fins of a Delhezi. However I may be overthinking all of this because all of his traits could easily fit an Endlicheri. But he looks like no other Endlicheri I have ever seen wich makes me think he is a hybrid.

I also know this super dark coloration dose not just come from stress because they have probalby had him for 6+ months and he has remaind the same. And all there other Polys seem very healthy. I highly doubt he is a Weeksii but I just thought I would throw the idea out. I am pretty certian he is at least 1/2 Endlicheri. Any ideas?

PS: I took the pics on my crappy camera phone so not the best quality but his coloration is not a trick from the camera he is actually that dark... he is actually even darker the pic lightened it up a bit.

Yeah I was leaning towards a dark endlicheri... but he is just SO dark. I have never seen one so dark anywhere. He is even daker than thoes pics makes him look. Is that common or could it be a health problem?

And thanks for the fast advise!

I have a dark Endli. Maybe not as dark as your's, but there are some dark ones lurking around here.

Do you have any pics of your dark endlicheri? I really like him just for that reason. I like "reject" fish haha. :)

oh and yeah, he is most definatly not healthy. He is missing both his eyes and he tail is split a few times. He came from a questionable pet store in china town. However I do not think the dark coloration is related to his health. I think it's just him.

Wow, I think you overpaid then, I wouldn't have paid any more than 5 bucks for a fish in that condition.
