does any one know if Polypterus senegalus can change thee colors? i had him on gravel and he was a dark color i changed to white sand and he has gotten lighter. is it just with age he gets lighter or do they actually change with there surroundings.

and does any one know whats causes them to dart from one side to the other full speed over and over? mine used to do it when he was on gravel in the 55. he started a while after he was in then stopped. but he just started again in the new tank that hes been in for about 2 and a half months. what causes this is it just a delayed adjustment?
Thanks.

i believe as they get older they do change colors but the way u are talking about im not sure, mine never have

but someone will have a better answer than me im sure

mine is about 3 years old now and he has been gradually getting lighter in color. It may also depend on gender but I dont know that for sure since I only have one Senegal and one ornate. My Senegal will sometimes do the darting thing too, unless it seems to do it to often he/she is probably ok, mine likes to splash around for exercise and also sometimes when he gets startled by a tank mate sneaking up behind him.

IDK.. i used to have a juvie senegula but it never changed colour. It had an sandy dark colour though which is pretty unusual.

Yes, their environment can drastically alter their coloration and attitude. They darken over dark substrates, and become more pale over light substrates.

Mine use to be on light color gravel, I changed to dark red/brown plant substrate and has brough out the green allow his back. My senegal is going on 8yrs. I also picked up a Palmas Polli that was just dark grey and black but after a few weeks on the dark substrate he has gotten much greener.
