polypterus with mbuna.....????

I have posted this in the poly forum as well.......

Does anyone have any experience of keeping poly's with malawi cichlids? If so, was it sucessful?

I kept malawis for years with catfish (who obviously feed in the same strata as poly's) without any problems as any aggression from the cichlids was directed at each other.

Was wondering if I could set up a large mbuna tank with a few birchir lurking around.....

i wouldnt recommend it.

while my africans get along with catfish, they tore the hell out of a senegal. Not sure what the difference is but IME it did not end well.

other way mbuna are smaller some poly in time could eat almost all of them...

but I am not expert....

good point mike, it all really depends on the size of the bichir u want. An endli could porbably snack on most of the mbuna, while a senegal might just eat the smaller ones/babies.

Thats a pretty dangerous mix a grew out poly would have your fish for lunch.

well, i had once kept a bunch of less than 1" bananas (labidos) with a 3" senegal bichir in a 20 gal holding tank . . . guess what . .. by the next day 2 bananas were missing and the bichir was fat. . . .not only that the same bichir once had a bunch rams (same size as bananas) with it and within 15 or so minutes of introducing them the bichir was running around with a ram in its mouth, which it could not swallow . . .

so go ahead . . .try and see if u get lucky . . .
