I'm looking at filling that barren mid-top level of my 75 gallon and was staying ancient and going with gars. What kind of gar would be able to live in a 75 for a substantial amount of time (6 - 8 months) and for life at around 180-250?

spotted, florida, and tropical gars should be able to stay in a 75 for 6-8 months, and possibly a bit longer, provided the tank is 18" wide, and they're good hardy gars to keep. To keep them for life, you really need a tank that's at least 2.5ft wide, or better yet, 3ft wide.

anyway, these three types of gars can generally make good bichir tankmates, provided they are of compatible size and you don't have a psycho individual (most aren't, so don't worry :D). Gars aren't strictly mid/top level though, when they get comfortable with the surrounding, they'll sit on the substrate just like the bichirs (pretending to be bichirs is what i always say :D)

ps. i'm not sure what the realistic max size for spotted/florida are in captivity, but for tropical gars with their wider mouth, you really only wanna keep it with medium to large species of bichirs eventually, or you risk the gar eating the tiny (relatively speaking) bichir.

I pretty much agree.

My FL/spotted spends a lot of its time on the substrate or swimming near it...not much time on the top.

What about belosonix, needlefish, FW barracuda or something similar?

Not even sure what a blesonix is, needlefish and fw barracuda are interesting ideas, I do have a couple ctenomopa in the tank so It can't be anything that will mess with them (they are going to end up in their own tank when the bichir start getting larger)

sorry, i spelled it way wrong, anyway, lol. They only get to like 6"s or so i've heard, so they might not work depending on the Polypterus sp(p). you have.

I guess none of the ones I mentioned are really "ancient".

Needlefish should go well with the ctenopoma and some species of barracuda would probably work, but I don't have any experience with them.

Alright which forum could I meander myself to so I can learn about some barracuda, sounds like an interesting prospect.
try Other Monster Fish or its subforum Other Characins

My spotted gar is 20". I bet it needs to take few B & F movement to turn around in a 75gal tank.

With my new job there is a very small chance that I won't be getting a 180+ gallon tank so he won't be stuck in there forever. I prefer to buy my fish smaller and watch them grow.
