Just want to make sure i dont buy a monster, which polys would be fine in a 55g with a LSN and a channel cat. (the c-cat will go to the pond as it outgrowns the tank) Accorting to a local distributer (www.sunpet.com), the ornats, palmas, Delhezi and congo will stay about 12" on length. Is that correct?

ornate is 24", delhezi and palmas about 12"-14", congo i'm not sure what they are but i'm guessing they could be senegals which stays around 10-12".

a lima shovelnose will get to big for a 55 right.

Congos are not the same as senegals. I think you are thinking of the

endlicheri congicus ('giant' or 'congo' bichir)- which gets 39"

Below is a list of possibilities for your 55 gallon
Species and sizes
maximum known sizes often smaller in captivity
Upper Jaw Species-Upper jaw protrudes past lower jaw
P. palmas palmas ('palmas' bichir)- 13"
(subspecies)P. palmas polli ('marbled bichir)- 14"
(subspecies) P. palmas buettikoferi ('buettikoferi' bichir)- 13"
P. delhezi ('armoured' or 'delhez's' bichir)- 14"
P. senegalus senegalus ('Senegal' or 'Cuiver's' bichir)- 12"
(possible subspecies)P. senegalus meridionalis- 12"+
There is, Also the possibility of a third member of the Polypterus senegalus
group that is found in the Nile River
P. retropinnis ('retropinnis' bichir)- 14"
P .mokelembembe
E. calabaricus ('Ropefish')- 15"-30" (Closer to 15''-20'' in captivity)

Off hand the place you got your information from well lets just say it isn't the best
info.
For the record sometimes importers or wholesalers use the common names often the country of origin or river of origin.I have seen P. senegalus labeled as ''Nigerian bichirs''
etc etc.-Anne

you would think that would be the case but it's not. when I bought my ornate the lfs had it label it as congo bichir while the senegals labeled as ornate bichirs :screwy:. and I doubt they would be congicus since those are wild caught and are not as readily available at most lfs. so really congos could be anything in this case.

you mean its not some kind of drum ?

congo drum get it I slay myself (holds sides giggling)

ok over it
