Pond block to help fight algae problem?

Guy I work with I told I was having an algae issue in my tank. This guy has tanks and has been active in the hubby fit over 20 years. He said I could put pond block in my tank and as long as it's oxygenated enough it wouldn't hurt anything. Is this true? Just thought I'd ask on here before I do.

Anyone ever finds this thread in the future I added the pond block and fish are fine and it clears the algae up good.
