My mom and I have been doing a lot of gardening and rock work around the property over the last few weeks. We got a few really good deals on flagstone and top soil so the whole property is getting a makeover. I've been talking to my mom about building a pond for weeks and now with the property looking so good, she finally caved in!:nilly: The only requirements are: That I put in pleasant fish, it cant cost more then $1000 total, and that there has to be a bench out there so she can drink her morning coffee and enjoy the fish.

So here's my idea:

I was figuring on something around 9'x12' with a 1' depth around the front edge and 2-3' depth everywhere else. I planned on draining the pond every October using a submersible pump and refilling it every spring. I'd rather not heat the pond during the cold Canadian winters so the fish will be coming inside every winter. This should save on the electric bill. I planned on cleaning out leaves and other debris twice a week. This should eliminate the need for a debris catcher.

I was pricing up equipment today and came up with a few items that might work:

Max Flo 9000 Pump.
-2500gph level, 1946gph at 1', 1180gph at 5' (the waterfall will be about 2' high)
-190 watts
-$150

Pressure Flo 1000 filter
-7 watt UV sterilizer
-rated for ponds up to 1000g
-$180

45mil 15'x20' liner
-$300
I may have to adjust the pond size to fit this liner unless I can find a place to get a bigger one cheaper.

I figure with the plumbing I'll be up around $800 including tax. This leaves another $200 for gravel and rocks. I'll be doing all the work myself (including digging *sigh*) on second thought, mabey I should put $100 of that money toward beer, I'll need it. :naughty:

So what do you think? Will the equipment work for the pond size? The pond won't be heavily stocked because I need to find room for the fish inside during the winter.

I have a few pictures here for reference.

Sounds great! But depending what u stock u might not even have to take the fish out for the winter. Save sone money on that water bill for mom lol

I also have a question regarding the pump and filter.

Does the flow go pond -> filter -> pump -> waterfall?

or

pond -> pump -> filter -> waterfall?

If you haven't noticed I'm a complete pond noob. :grinno:

I'm still debating on that idea. Being in Canada, sometimes the temperatures go down to -20F I've even seen -40. So its not a matter of if it'll freeze up but how deep it'll freeze. Can pumps even operate in these kind of temperatures?

-20 is no problem, -40 might need to watch and protect a little at night. Koi/goldfish ponds do fine in Canada. This is a Chicago pic.
