My wife and I recently purchased a new home with two acres on it in Hampton Roads, VA. I am tossing the idea of digging a pond around and stocking it with some RTCs. I found a pond kit that will give me a pond of about 25' x 45' at 2' deep. If I do this, it is going to be for monster cats, and I am going to heat it and cover it in the winter. Is 2' deep enough for RTCs, or would I need to make it deeper?

Yes I'd go at least 3' minimum but 4' is better. BTW how are you going to HEAT this pond ? It will cost at least $1000 a month to heat a outdoor pond of that size in winter.

ya mine cost about $300+ to heat it and mine is only 14'x4'wide x4'deep but im moving them into the workout/garage/fishroom not because of the cost but cuz u cant see them and injoy them as much and yess the water is very clear but topical fish dont have the color to see them so that why im moving them but i will use the same heater i use on the pond

It will be literally impossible to heat that much water. Get some blues, channels and flathead cats. They will do much better in your area. I had a 30" albino channel for years and he acted much like my rtc. Hand feeding and whatnot

Kits are usually a waste of money, dig your own pond, buy a tarp and line the pond with it, use decorative rocks or bricks to hide the ends of the tarp and then just buy a filter for it. That way you can determine the shape and size of the pond to your specifics and likings. Also, since you're in VA, you shouldn't keep fish that need to be in tropical waters, I'm in the same boat here in NY. I'd love to have a huge amazonian based pond with Pacu and maybe some Aro's, but It's impossible to keep anything large heated.

When i built my first pond for my red it was outdoors and as soon as thw winter months arived it was costing a bomb to heat and a real strugel to maintain the temp. In the evening the pond would just steam and all i could think was all that steam=£££££££

Thanks for the quick replies everyone. Maybe I won't do a pond! I guess I will just have to build a big tank and put it in the garage!

my RTC's tank is 2' deep. i dont see why the depth is an important factor so long as the footprint is sufficient

luckily for me heating is required only 3 months of the year and the lowest temp is 17 deg only so not too bad from heating point of view ... in your case, a cover should reduce the bill

thats where im at now building them there're indoor pond/tank with a biggass window so i can injoy them better than outside so for now there in a swimming pool hehe till i find a cheap place for the plexyglass
