i have a 1200 pond that ive kept koi and goldies in for the last few years, but this coming spring/summer i want to bring in a lot more fish for resale and want to keep them in the pond.
so i will need to up my filtration of course

the plan is to pump water from the pond UP through my uv sterilizer, then into a bio filter and then gravity feed back to the pond.
the 2 ideas i have so far are:

1) something like a bio-tower where the water would trickle down over bioballs or scrubbies and then back to the pond

2) a large barrel or tub filled with bioballs, filter floss, or scrubbies which would be fully submerged in water, with the water flowing in and around them before it returns to the pond

i guess i dont know the pros and cons of a trickle system compared to one using submerged media

my plan is to have the existing 6x 14" koi, and then ~150x 2-5" koi

my pump is currently 1200gph but i will probably up that to at least 2500-3000gph

i am also open to other ideas for filtration just give me some thoughts
thanks

In order for a uv sterilizer to work properly, you need the correct amount of water flow through it. You would probably want a bypass with a valve put in the line to achieve the right amount of flow for the uv. Either one of your filter ideas would work. A trickle system allows more oxygenated water to reach the media containing the beneficial bacteria. The media is exposed to the air while the water trickles over it.

As far as your stocking idea is concerned. 150 koi is way too many fish for a 1200 gallon pond.

150 fish at 3-4" is too much ?!?!?

i use my uv just for killing algae, which it has done very well for the past 3 summers using a couple different gph pumps

He clearly states he is going to resell them

I think ur trickle system will work I have a 5 gal bucket filled w/ biomedia on my indoor pond and its doing great.

Resale or not, still too many fish.

i'd be interested to get some more input on that ...

16' x 4' x 30" deep with tons of filtration ... 150x 3-4" fish ... i just dont see it being overstocked unless they all get considerably larger, which wont happen since i plan to resell as many as possible

Here is a quick read on koi growth: http://www.coloradokoi.com/koisize.htm

Young koi grow approximately 1 inch per month, and should reach 8-9 inches in length in their first year. Too many fish in a pond will stunt their growth.
