Pond filters in fish tanks?

Hi'

I'm getting fed up with my sump problems and am thinking of scrapping it for some external pond pumps, are these ok with tropical fish tanks? will be going on a 280g tank

As far as I know the only difference is the chance of having a higher water bypass rate.Which means that there will be more water that can pass through unfiltered and therefor won't look quite so clean and crisp.

Also the filter will be a little noisier due to the fact that being outside noise isn't taken into consideration as much as filters that are designed to be run within the house.
