My father-in-law. He has a Koy Pond. There are 3 Large Koi and a bunch of comets.

In fact he's over run with comets. They just keep breeding. I took 4 of them for my little tank and they are some of the healthiest fish i've ever obtained.

In fact i got 2 fan tail goldfish from the LFS and they died and did really crappy, but these comets i got from his pond are super alert, eat well and have shown no signs of disease or parasites.

Is it safe to assume that the rest of his comets are this healthy and are safe to feed to my large fish in the big tank? (he keeps asking if i want to take them and feed them to my fish so he can get rid of them)

I know my arrow would appreciate a live meal of fish, but i dont buy feeders. Too afraid they'll make my fish sick.

What do you think? (also, i dont have a quarantine tank to store feeders in)

Probably are safe, although just verify they don't have worms or other interal issues

I don't think it would be a problem as an occasional treat.

since the goldfish would be coming from a known source, i would think its OK. i would assume your FIL would tell you if his pond has had any diseases in it recently.

the biggest problem with goldfish is they carry diseases. when their either bred yourself (which these pretty much are) or quarentined for awhile, they make great live treats for big fish, if thats what you want to do. just only feed here or there, in addition to your fishes regular diet of course

Sounds OK to me as long as you are sure there are no diseases. You might quarantine and treat before feeding.

thanks guys. i hesitated before, but after having these 4 and seeing just how healthy they have stayed.
and after asking you guys, i feel that they are safe to feed.
There have been no new additions to his pond in over a year. So all the fish there have been there a while, and any new fish that are there were born there.

Thanks.

never even heard of that before.

learn something new every day.

But i would only be feeding them the pond goldfish once in a blue moon when my FIL needs to cull some because they are getting overpopulated.
