I am going to have a pond (600 gallons at least) with a texas cichlid and a pumpkinseed sunfish. I am moving to the Houston area so the temperature outside will rarely drop below 60 and even then it will . Will I need to heat the water or will it be fine if they go through the colder temperature for 3 months? And if I need to heat the water do you have any suggestions for what I should use to do so?

There are wild texas all over the place in houston so temp shouldnt be a problem

Is the pond going to be above-ground or in-ground? The reason I ask is that an in-ground pond is better insulated and will have less temperature swings than am above-ground pond; in-ground ponds are also better suited for overwintering fishes without a heater because of their insulating properties.

I was planning on it being an above-ground since there is an underground sprinkler system in the yard, is there a way to keep it better insulated even though it is an above-ground?
