Pond heating!!!?

I was wondering how I could heat a decent size pond in the winter time.? I live in SoCal, and the pond would be in my garage. Is a heater necessary?

Not sure about size, 8x6? I am keeping a red tail cat and a tiger shovelnose. Maybe arowana?
