If I were to have two sheets of glass:
96”x48” in 1/2” (tempered)
72”x24” in 1/2” (tempered)

How can I safely use the 48” tall sheet? 1/2” seems like it would be too thin but I dont work with glass so need some advice.

Pond dimensions: 16’x6’x ? I was intending to do 40” total height including subfloor material etc

Second question (rookie one, sorry) but can professional glass shops cut down the height on the largest sheet? Is that possible with tempered?

From my understanding once the glass is tempered it’s a done deal. Cutting it will shatter the sheet.

Okay I’m sorry I’m wrong you can cut tempered glass but that’ll require you to heat the glass up to about 1000 degree or more depending to anneal the glass in order to remove all stress points and a sheet your size would take a few months

Looks like this is not going to work based on some side conversations I’m having with people I trust. Bummer. I’ll have to figure something else out

I believe 1/2" tempered glass might work for the height you're suggesting. After all, tempered glass is much stronger than normal glass.

To be fair, my only source is that Customaquariums.com indicates that they use .5" tempered glass on the front and back panels of their 8' long, 4' tall tanks.

Interesting as I’m hearing the opposite. Where are people going to get engineering advice?

I just thought I'd share what i saw after perusing that particular manufacturers site--im certainly no expert. Perhaps reach out to customaquariums for reassurance. Theyve always been pretty responsive when i had questions.

I just thought if it worked for a tank panel it should work for a viewing window.

You maaaaaybe could use the 48" tall one, but you'd have to add some extra bracing on it maybe every 2 feet. Effectively making it four 24"X48" panes. Plugging that into a glass thickness calculator that's really marginal, but they calculate for float glass, not tempered.

Sorry for being a pain. WHat if I were to add a support across the length of the glass at the 36" height of the pond? I would run the water level at 28"-30". Would that impact the integrity of the glass/tank?
