Planning on putting a fairly standard pond in my backyard not sure on the size yet, maybe about 8 feet round by 2-3 feet deep. I love in mid north az temps can go from about 100 down to 15. I'm looking for low maintenance. What would be best, planted? Koi? Goldfish? An what filtration aeration would be needed for each?

Based on those dimensions, you're looking at a pond that holds about 750 to 1,130 gallons of water depending on the water depth. In order to help combat the heat, I would make sure to place the pond in an area that gets plenty of shade in order to keep the water temperature down; having more water volume & plenty of surface movement will also help to deal with the heat. Install a bottom drain & skimmer(s) and hook up the air pump (such as this one) to the bottom drain in order to help with circulation & aeration. Filtration will need to be customized to the amount of light that the pond receives & your stocking levels as well as a few other factors.

I would start looking at stocking options after you have the pond up & running so that you can get an idea as to how warm the pond will stay; some fishes will not be able to handle the high temperatures.

Shade is not really an option unless I build a cover. Right now I'm looking at going the sinewy route with the most low maintenance species or plant really. Dimensions can be changed
