Hey, First post on this site.

Am starting to build my first pond, which will be a 540litre above ground pond. with a water fall from top tiear flowing into the lower.

Looks interesting. Is this going to be indoors or outdoors?

Will it be dug into the ground and lined with pond liner, or built out of wood, concrete block, etc?

What kind of filtration system are you planning on running?

What kind of fish (assuming you include some) will you be adding?

It'll be an outdoor above ground, consisting of a Marine ply inner frame braced with aluminium and lined with a pond liner. Then clad with probably Jarrah.

Not sure on filtration still trying to get my head around whats best, as have conflicting arguements as to how big you must go for koi, or just have goldfish which is a tad boring for my tastes..

Hi and welcome to the forum

540 ltr pond is way to small for koi .
I would suggest a min 2000ltrs with a min depth of 600mm i do say min
1m would be preferable.
It helps keep the water temps more stable its not like you live in a country with a cold climate.

Go as big as the space allows. Both depth and surface area.

Marine Grade plywood is not needed. Regular green or rot resistant lumber and plywoods will do. You will save a lot of money not going w/Marine grade ply.

I agree with Muske on the plywood.

Also, go as big as you can (spacewise or financially). You'll regret it later if you don't, especially if you want to keep koi and not goldfish.

As far as filters, I've read and heard good things about the Wakin filter (basically a 55g poly drum filter). Bog filters are also good filtration (my main filtration).

If you have decided on a koi pond .
Spend a little extra time planning.

Decide on the pond size how many fish you want to have in it and then design filtration to suit.
The best place to start with filtration would be a bottom drain.

Ok so i know that, i should have taken manufacturing pics, and all. however my pond has been built and running for a couple of months now and i have neve been the most interested in photography.

However here are some pics of the pond in its almost completed stage. which is my first pond built ever.
