hi, i want to build a pond for koi in a shed, and i was wondering if anyone could refer me to good books on where to started and all the care and equipment etc.

and whats a good rule of thumb for stocking, ive read 50 gallons per koi, but ive also read 100.?

thanks

nitro

Koi get huge, 50 gallons per fish won't cut it. Your stocking level depends a lot on your filtration. I prefer to stock lite so that I don't have to remove fish later on. I only have 6 koi in my 2000 gallon pond. You can keep several small fish but they will get big fast. If your pond is less than a thousand gallons, I would recomend larger gold fish rather than Koi.

im gonna ballpark the pond around 3000 gallons. it will obviously have adequate filtration. even places that still follow the inch per gallon rule say 50 gallons per koi, but id be willing to go 100-150, thatd be about 20 koi if 150.

main point of this thread, anyone use good reference books for keeping koi?

How big is the shed?

Say the shed is 12 X 12. A pond 10 X 10 at 4' deep will be 3K gal. That leaves no room for a filter.

Why not build it outside?

All good books. Unless you have a koi vet near you the Koi medicine should be a necessity (if your serious about Koi).

If you read enough on the internet you can get a consensus of what is true and right.

You should be able to find alot of ideas about the ponds on this site too.

thanks for the help. the shed will be big enough for the filter... otherwise whats the point of the shed? i wanted to put it in a shed due to very cold winters, and to keep out raccoons and stuff, and to keep the pond clean. the shed will probably be big enough for some other stuff, so id say like 30 feet long or so. i was thinking more of a rectangular pond than square.
