I am planning to build a pond in 4 months 6'x12'x3' = 1,600 gallons.
1. What would be the most efficient filtration: sand gravel filter or trickle wet dry filter?
2. What skimmer should i use?
3. What pump should i use and size? I want something that is energy efficient even if it cost a little more.
4. Is a bottom drain necessary, i plan not to put one.
5. What aquatic plants should i put? I have in mind water hyacinth and cat tails.
I will have 10 to 12 kois @ 14" average.
Thanks for any input.

1. Are you handy? A DIY bog filter will work the best with that fish load. A sand or bead may be used as additional Bio, but shouldn't be the end all.

2. I only use Aquascape. www.aquascapeinc.com Look for a retailer in your area.

3. Again Aquascapeinc. Aquasurge 3000. 3300 gph w/o any head and only 180 watts.

4. Not necessary at only 3' deep. Aquascape makes a bottom drain (pond sweep) that is plumbed w/o cutting the liner and be installed down the road if needed.

5. That will be determined by the Koi. Check with local pond/koi clubs in your area for varieties that have been successful. The two you mentiioned are great. The cattails should be potted since they have a very sharp, pointed tap root that could cause liner damage.
