I'm doing a tropical pond in the yard about 10' by 6' by either 3-4' deep
Is this deep enough to keep predators away?
The pond will be covered at night, and days we arn't home.
Can a heron even feed in 4 foot deep water? thanks.

If the fish come to the edge they can be picked off. Used to happen all the time with mine.

hmm. didn't think of that.
I was going to have some pacu and aa huge niger cat mixed in, do you think a heron would view 3-4ft fish swimming in there as possible threats, and leave the smaller fish, and entire pond, alone?

Probably not. Best thing to hope for is they eat the herons. Or you could look into a device called a scarecrow. Hooks up to your water hose with a sensor on it. When the sensor detects movement in the area it blasts it with water. Just don't forget to turn it off before the "Pond Beautiful" tour comes through or you might not score so well.

Get a bird dog and a small floating dog house position it next to the most likely heron feeding areas of your pond.

just get an alligator and there will be no herons left

a resolution is to GO BIGGER! GO DEEPER! but seriously you just have to put some good thick veg along the edge. i had a small pond that use to get fished out by the local cats. they even took a pleco i had around 13"

i wish.
if i could find a gator, and didn't have fish in the pond, i would.

just add chicken wire and make a fence around the whole perimeter of the pond and make the fence groove over like a curve...or if you want just get the device that dragonfish stated earlier...i would go with that device, seems more soluable and easy to ward off intruders like herons and other predatory birds and other vermins...like racoons and possums.
