alright, i gotten a fiberglass rock pond from a friend , intend to add some waterplants like waterlilies , duckweeds.., is it possible not to use any filtration system and let it mature into a natural ecosystem with waterplants and maybe one or two small fishes?

How many gallons? I would say no, but I over filter everything.

quite small , maybe 120 gal, what kind of filtration you running for your pond?

I've got a 1200-1250 gal. pond w/a skimmer and bio-falls filter. I'm using a pump rated @ 4500 gph. It's probally running @ 3500-4000gph since I have about 18' of pipe til it reaches the falls. I'm thinking I've got at least a three times turn over rate. Like Joe said, it depends on where you live. A pond that small will completely freeze in colder climates. The same is true in tropical/warmer climates. Smaller ponds get to warm and temp. flucuations may be to drastic for fish, and possiblly some plants. You can try to run it w/o filtration as an experiment. I've seen it done on little patio ponds, but I have no experience w/ them myself.
Good Luck...
