So this is random, but I work at Menards, and in our garden center, we carry a bunch of stuff for ponds, like water conditioner, barley and peat extract, etc. A lot of it is junk (at least I think so, like extra bacteria? Once it's cycled, can't you stop adding bacteria? Anyway....) Is any of it good for a smaller indoor tank? It's all TetraPond brand, which I know isn't the best, but one bottle is like $6 and treats close to 2500 gallons, which to me seems like a great deal. Your thoughts on this? We have huge external canister filters and pumps too.

I use tetra pond amonia remover in my tanks. I also use pond prime for water conditioning. You can use pond products for your aquarium. Just do the math and don't overdose... Some of us on here can use pond products full strength due to the size of our aquariums:naughty::grinno:!!!!!!!!

With pond products, you get more for your money when you are using it for aquariums.

I use a lot of things in pond form.

Nice! I am jealous of those of you who don't even have to worry about overdosing :p I might have to pick some up after my next paycheck :) This one probably isn't as easy, but we also sell products for swimming pools, like chlorine and stuff. I know chlorine is bad, but we also have stuff like alkaplus and alkaminus, which is supposed to raise or lower the hardness of your pool. Is it aquarium safe? I'm guessing no, but I thought I would ask.

Why would you want to raise or lower the hardness of your tank?

If it's for discus or something that needs lower, use driftwood.

If it's for african cichlids, use holey rock (limestone), cichlid substrate, or baking soda.

I've been using driftwood because my ph and hardness tend to get really high, and I just wondered if the alkaminus would work. I'm doubting it; I just wanted your guys' thoughts.

Gotcha.. I personally wouldn't use that though. lol.

I've been using Tetra's Pond AquaSafe and it treats 50,000 gallons. Picked it up at PetCo during their fall clearance of pond supplies for $7. I've figured at my current rate of water changes that $7 of water conditioner will last me another 7-10 years.

^^ it will not be effective in 7-10 years.

It has an expiration date for a reason.
