Where the gators are
So i have a 330 gallon tank thats about ready for water. i was wondering if i could take water out of an outdoor pond and put it in the tank to get the bacteria to jumpstart.

the water is dirty but but i dont treat it with anything, just natural

the surface is nothing but floating plants

the ph is 7.6

and it houses a 14 inch bowfin
a armoured catfish
a butter catfish
some bluegill
(all fish are wild caught)
and goldfish

when setting up my other tanks i usually just tank some plants out of the pond and wash them off and put them in. but can i use the water. will this hurt anything, should i be worried about something

I don't think there is any point too. There really isn't anything in the water column that will help cycle your tank. It will probably just give you brown water.

ah. so that wont help speed anything up?

what could i use to help cycle the water?
I use the stress zyme and dechlorinator along with putting in lots of plants.
last time i did this i had fish in the next day and have never had a death due to water quality. but at a tank this size im just not sure.

its for my RTC whos outgrowing his 60 gal hex and its taking longer than i thought to get this tank finished due to the pond coat shipping too late. hes gonna be almost 1 foot by the time i even get water in the tank. so i need to to cycle fast

Take some filter media out of the pond filter and set it in your tank in a basket or something so its easily removed. that will jump start your cycle for sure. I'd be a little scared of parasites but that aside I think you'll be fine.

Use your filters from the 60 and media from the pond. that will help speed it up. The bacteria doesn't acually live in the water, it is in the media. The water will not help you.

If you want something to help look into seachem stability. 100x better than stress zyme IMO. I have used it many times with great success. You put the fish in whenever you want, and then dose daily to help cycle that tank. Perfect for impatient people.

I would also use some established filter media if you have any.

well the pond doesnt have a filter in it. it just naturally cycles itself so i guess just from the 60 i could take an old cartridge. i set up a 35 about 2 weeks and put one of my FX5s on it so it could be seeded.

now this seachem stability. ive heard about this but havent seemed to find it in the store. ill look for some tomorrow but what is the per gallon ratio?

^^ Use pond filter media.

also how long do you put the seachem in. like every day for a week or a month?

I don't remember the dosage per gallon, but you are supposed to dose daily for 7 days and your done. I do it for 2 weeks just to be safe though. No problems with Stability yet for me.
