I live in Ontario. During the winter months its not uncommon for temperatures to drop down below -20c (-4f) for weeks at a time. It even went down to -39c (-38f) once.

How would a pond fair in this kind of weather. I've noticed that no one around me, in fact no one in my entire town has a pond. Is there a reason for this or are they just a bunch of pansys? How deep would it have to be? What size of heater would you need? (just enough to keep the fish alive). Could a filtration system even operate in temperatures like that? Would bubbles alone be enough to keep the pond from freezing over all the way?

What do you think?

indoor pond is a better choice! outdoor pond need to be at least 5 ft(I think) and heater is an expensive problem !

im from B.C. and my koi survive the winters with no heaters, I just make sure there is a hole in the ice for the gasses to escape. Just pour hot water on the ice to melt a hole and never smash it. the shock of smashing the ice will scare and possibly kill them. I keep my filter going all year round and it doesnt freeze. Stop feeding them when the water dips below 50 deg start again when it rises above. In B.C. i am trying to feed them now and they still arnt interested.
good luck.
look in the pond section under 2000 ish pond that is my set up.
21' x 4' x 4'. never freezes solid more than 2 or 3 inches all winter.
