im looking at upgrading to a 10x4 or 8x4 tank, and leaning towards a large canister filter for mech, and then into a trickle tower for bio.

I'm in the uk so the ultima filters aren't available, but we do have similar ones called k1 micro bead filter, however these are approx £1000.

Also sold here are swimming pool sand filters like below, 18" diameter for only £200?!

They look very similar and the one below is made of fibreglass.

Is it possible to retro fit these for use with k1 media. Anybody had any success doing so, or any reason why not possible?

I have used these filled with small pebbles and sinking media. The downside of pebbles is they are a little too dense and you don't get the best backwash. You can try the K1, It will probably work. If there is an issue the media might be too light and not form the cover over the laterals you are going to want. If you use K1 I would pack a lot in there . If you can find a slightly denser media that would be ideal.

Thanks, yeah I don't see the benefit of pebbles!

With k1 that's what I was worried about, k1 is buoyant so will it catch the detritus inside as not at the bottom.

Issue with packing it tight is that it won't be able to move properly when backwashing to clean it?

I don't think it needs to be so tight it cannot move, but I would probably fill more than 80% of the cavity. If you want to go the crazy route your could mount the unity upside down.

Looking at the specs of k1 bead filter the water flows the same way, don't see why it wouldn't work?

I don't think they do. The K1 flows in the bottom and over the top in filter mode. The pool filter should flow in the top and draw from the laterals in filter mode. The other option is you could plumb it backwards and run it on backwash to filter.
