Could I put a sand pool filter on my 120 gal african cichlid tank or would it hurt my fish? I found a sweet deal on a pool filter but I dont want to buy it for no reason.

Thanks

A pool filter will work. However, I would recommend only using one in an emergency. Aquarium pumps are designed for low heat production, low noise, and lowest possible power consumption. Pool filter pumps are not.

Actually the best answer would be no.

There are three types of filters used in the pool industry; sand, cartridge, and diatamatous earth. Only a cartridge filter is suitable for aquariums that are under 1000 gallons. Sand filters require backwashing with a pump strong enough to lift the sand bed (which is why Oddball's train of thought went straight to pool pumps). Also, the amount of water required to backwash the filter would leave the aquarium bone dry. :(
