Hey everyone. I'm planning on putting a pool filter together to filter my fish room. The room will have roughly 800 gallons. I have picked out a filter and and pump. My question is should I run a sump/ refugium as well? To collect water centrally. And what will be the best media sand/ glass beads to have in the filter? Is that media going to be the main bio filter storage? Is it ok to run carbon in there as well?

It is alot of questions. Thanks for any input. Maybe someone can suggest a article/link to help inform me better.

It's a good idea, a lot of folks do this here. I run an Ultima II 10,000 with a 3600gph pump, energy efficient as well. Shop around for a pump that wont be high in watts. I got mine from MarineDepot.com.

I don't run a sump but others do. If I had the room I would have a sump with socks.

use recycled glass media, it out performs sand media, requires less media, and it polishes your water.

My understanding is that the glass doesn't hold bacteria. A advantage for pools but not for what were doing right? We would want to have more bacteria growing surface area correct?

I guess the trade off with the glass would be a bio sump?

Your beyyer off initially investing less in another form of filtration. Your energy bills will be sky high. Your filtration will be under par and you will not be able to sell it. A used ultima 2 will sell easily though if you don't like it. Homemade would be a great option as well.

Another member Kendragon can probably explain it a little better to you but it does hold bacteria, it does biological and mechanical filtration. Its all he runs on his highly stocked peacock bass tank.
