Will pool filter sand be ok with a HOB filter? I have read about horror stories with play sand and HOB's. I have a 75 gallon with an aqueon HOB rated for 55 gallons and a fluval 405. The fluval is brand new and not cycled so I'm kinda worried that my HOB will get messed up and I will be left with a good filter that doesn't have enough beneficial bacteria built up in it. The fluval has been running for close to a week with the cycled aqueon.

I use two ac110's on my 75 and one on my 50 with not one issue at all. If you are going with digging cichlids then just keep the intake higher or go with a pre-filter sponge.

Do you happen to know how much sand to use? Is it 1lb per gallon?

Really depends on the depth you want in the tank. I would get two 50 lb bags and add the first one and put the second one in small doses to you get the depth you want.

With hob siphon is no where near the ground so I don't see how ud ever have to work unless u have a pleco that stirs it for a living..

I have PFS in 3/4 of my tanks. Just cut the inlet tube a little shorter and use a sponge cover if you have to.
