has anyone tried pool filter sand with their rays? I know my discus like it and it seems to look good for a decent length of time.

Yup, pool filter sand is perfect for Rays. I've only ever kept one, but she was on pool filter sand for a long time with no problems. Make sure it's quartz and not silica.
ive never kept on pool filter sand, but i just bought some quartz filter sand (not sure if its different than pool filter sand or not) from my lfs for my cichlid tank. best looking imo and it was $20 for a 50lb bag, which was cheaper than pool filter sand at lowes!!
Check out actual pool & spa supply stores if you're able. I can get a 50 pound bag for like $7 Canadian.
