I'm planning on getting a ray soon and I already have Quickcrete pool filter sand in my tank. Will I have to change it or will it be okay? It does contain silica.

I know silica vs. non silica is debatable but I'm just looking for people's opinions. :)

Well in that case, I say if you have the cash, go for guaranteed safety, comfort, quality, and great look, all by choosing from the caribsea super naturals line. It is designer substrate. Each of their variety was designed to look like the real substrates from famous rivers and beaches around the world. All are inert, all are ray safe (even have a ray on the bags), and are gorgeous. I have crystal river, many have torpedo beach, others with others. There is a white fine sand one which might go up a filter but the others just sink basal down quick. You can see little samples on caribseas website.

Okay thanks. :) Has anyone on here used Quickcrete pool filter sand as a substrate for rays? The bag doesn't say how much silica it contains. If nobody has kept rays with PFS safely, than I will be purchasing Carib Sea. I'm just wondering about other's personal experiences.

you will be absolutely ok with pfs ive done it and so has many ppl!!!! enjoy the new future ray!

How can you say absolutely when there are half a dozen members who've reported problems? I agree, you'll most likely be fine, but not absolutely.

I have been fine with Leslie's pool filter sand, but I don't know about Quickrete. Leslie's does have silica so I think you should be ok.

I would say grab a handful and squeeze as tight as you can or press your hand down on the surface of the sand already in your tank. If you don't feel any sharpness you're good.

I did playsand and so far it's been so-so. Still working out how to keep it clean.

I've used leslie's for many different types of fish, but never with rays beacuase I've switched to barebottom. I don't think you'll have any issues. There are many people that will debate about the silica content as well as my "non-use" of sand with rays.
