I am nearly done with my new stingray pond and I am trying to decide if I am leaving it bare bottom or using a thin layer of sand. I did some searching and found alot of people using quartz pool filter sand with there rays so I know its safe for the rays. Out of all the posts I only found one person complaining about the sand sticking to the rays disks, I was wondering if others have had the same problem? Is pool filter sand a very fine sand that is going to get kicked up alot by the rays?

Can anyone recommend some sand that would be better but not cost a fortune? Even a thin layer of sand when your talking about a 10'x14' area is going to take alot of sand.

I used pool filter sand that was I believe red-flint brand. Sold in 50LB bags. Did NOT stick to rays and stayed settled almost better then Estes brand. Very natural looking too.

IF you're putting Marbles in the pond USE SAND. The bare liner just destroys the patterns.

I agree with DB. Pool filter sand doesn't stick to the rays and is large enough so it settles quickly when the rays are playing. I've been using it for the last year.

Few pics of the bag of the stuff I'm talkin about....

I'm thinkin it was like $20/bag maybe less?

I have my 2 motoro pups on pool sand as well, and I haven' had any problems at all. As said before surprisingly it looks natural!!

What color is the one you posted DB. Mine is snow white but can't remember the manufacturer. I considered using it but figured it would really wash out my flower.

I'm sure the stuff in the pics will not stick to rays unless slimecoat is shedding.

This thread shows what the stuff in the pics looks like in tank. NOT the black/white but rather the tan stuff.

Funny thing is........ That's your male John..... ;) Bred by JimR. He's also my lil males daddy.

This thread captures Marble transformation from black liner to more natural looking sand and a well lit tank..
