okay..so i've heard that pool filter sand with SILICA is bad and it would irritate the stingray belly....but on the contrary, i also heard that they like it and it doesnt bother them at all...can some 1 please confirm and clarify this for me? thanks in advanced..

sorry for not being detailed enough..but there is a difference in the pool filter sand wid silica and wid out it..which usually is all quartz...so wut im trying to say is...is it okay or not okay for rays wid pool filter sand dat HAVE silica...thanks in advanced
Silica sand, has sharp edges and will cut the bottom of the ray! You'll start noticing red sores on the bottom side of the ray.
i also use spa sand, not sure if theres a difference in pool sand, to bad i dont have the bag ready, ive had the same sand in my tank for 5 years now. ill check the garage to see if i have any left. it was a 50ib bag for $6!!!

Silica based sand is not good to have in a tank with rays. Like flagtail said it will irritate there bellys and can cause sores. Also black tahitian moon I have heard although not silica based contains sharp grains of sand and can irritate a rays belly.
So the 100% quartz pool filter sand would be fine like Colin has. I use quickcrete playsand for my rays. Also any other sand that is non silica based and doesn't seem like it has sharp grains is fine.

I've been wandering how you can tell what sand is made of? is it on the bag, or does it fill different?
